Issue No. 36, March 2008

CEO Hans Meeuwisse

Turbulent markets? Timing is everything!

There are moments that we are glad we are running a simple warehousing and logistics company. This one of those moments. Albeit it has it's daily challenges.

What we've seen over the past couple of weeks with subprime problems, billions of dollars on losses, extreme gold and oil prices, continued rate cuts, metalprices continuing to go up, unbelievable. Factors that cannot be easily controlled but having an enormous impact on production facilities (electricity in South Africa)..... People must have sleepless nights over these issues. We wish them good luck and wisdom with their decision making.

Is our business environment becoming increasingly more difficult? More volatile for sure. On the Amsterdam Stock Exchange daily changes up and down of 2 to 3% are more a rule than an exception these months. As many things in life, timing is everything. If consumption delays and productions continues, the logical consequence is a place to store your goods, safeguarded, well controlled through IT systems, under alarm, well protected.

If we stand at the cycle of increased tonnages, Vulcaanhaven is readily available to help and assist you whenever/whereever possible. Crushing, screening (with our latest updated license!!), customs related matters, worldwide forwarding, chartering/stevedoring. The long and short of it: Despite Turbulent markets, this would be the best timing ever to use our services!

Have a good read and see you in Hong Kong!

yours sincerely,

T.J.(Hans) Meeuwisse.

Improved connection to the hinterland

source: Daniel VervoortThe Port of Rotterdam and The Deutsche Bahn AG (German Railway Company) have agreed to improve the railway connection from the Port of Rotterdam to the hinterland. By working together more closely, an extended transport system will increase productivity and efficiency. Hans Smits, president of the Port of Rotterdam, states that more investments in infrastructure are needed to handle the ever growing amount of cargo that needs transporting around from the Port of Rotterdam. The agreement implies that current connections are improved and long distance traffic will be optimized. This will be done by, among others, creating more hub and spoke concepts.

Vulcaanhaven has a railway connection to the terminal, and is extremely happy with the ongoing improvement of the railway connection with the hinterland.

Although it's busy, its safe!
Safety first!
The Port of Rotterdam is flourishing. More ships, more cargo and more business. The companies in the region are befitting from this trend, and so is Vulcaanhaven. A recent nautic study shows that even though frequencies and amounts increased, safety has not been sacrificed. On the contrary, the number of accidents in the Port of Rotterdam in 2007 decreased with 12% from 117 to 103. At Vulcaanhaven, safety is a precious good. Adequate safety protocols ensure that all Vulcaanhaven employees operate in a safe working environment.

When considering safety, we care about our people. But we don't forget our clients! For them we have 24/7 (video)surveillance in order to watch over their business! For more information, please contact our .

New agreement with Harbour Unions

The Port of Rotterdam has come to new agreements with the harbour Unions. Union AgreementThis new agreement ensures a stable working environment within the Port of Rotterdam for another 2 years. For the Port of Rotterdam, the new agreement is one step closer to becoming one of the most appreciated employers of the Netherlands. Both the Unions and the Port of Rotterdam, including Vulcaanhaven of course, are happy that such a satisfying, effective and motivating agreement has been made.

Happy HollandHappy Vulcaanhaven Staff

The Dutch economy is flourishing and is ahead of the rest of the World, this is the result of the compilation of the 'misery-index' of 25 industrialised countries. The 'misery index' was an idea of the brilliant economist Arthur Okun (1960's), and is calculated by adding up the inflation- and unemployment rates of a country. This number gives a good indication of the state of the economy of that country.

The positive rating of the Dutch economy is not a surprise. It fits with the positive figures, signals and prognoses that have come out recently. On the picture you can see that Vulcaanhaven Staff is as happy as predicted!

Fenex Conditions - A Reminder

spartaSparta Rotterdam

Sparta was the victim of NEC of Nijmegen last week. Sparta seemed to win the match, but NEC´s striker force was succesfull in the last 10 minutes. After Sparta took the lead 2 times, NEC defender Pothuizen made it a one-man show, scoring enough to keep the victory and the points in Nijmegen. Sparta is now 14th, but still needs points in order to stay safe!

If you want to see one of the home games please let us know. A game at Sparta is always a big happening, with a great atmosphere. You will enjoy it with us.

For more info about Sparta check http://www.sparta-rotterdam.nl/. If you are interested to watch a game, be our guest!

Joke of the Month

The Pirate

A pirate walked into a bar and the bartender said: 'Hey, I haven't seen you in a while. What happened? You look terrible.' ´What do you mean?' said the pirate, 'I feel fine.'

Bartender: 'But what about the wooden leg? You didn't have that before.'
Pirate: 'Well, we were in a battle and I got hit with a cannon ball, but I'm fine now.'
Bartender: 'OK, but what about that hook? What happened to your hand?'
Pirate: 'We were in another battle. I boarded a ship and got into a sword fight. My hand was cut off and I got fitted with a hook. I'm fine, really.'
Bartender: ´So what about the eye patch?'
Pirate: 'Oh, one day we were at sea and a flock of birds flew over. I looked up and one of them shit in my eye.' - 'You're kidding,' said the bartender, 'you lost an eye just from bird hit?'
Pirate: 'It was my first day with the hook.'
