"Firing on all Cylinders"
Despite economic downturn all around us, at Vulcaanhaven we remain busy. With a ‘lean & mean' team we focus day in day out on the service aspect of our clients. They recognize and appreciate the quick turn around of cargoes, careful and swift reporting, in other words, an almost failure free service. Whilst summer periods have traditionally showed a doll drum, at our end of the business, this is hardly the case.
Be it crushing/screening, repacking/weighing or overall cargo turn around, our customers have kept us busy. When you drive your car in Holland and faster than the speed limit by 50km p/hour, you lose your licence. Firing on all cylinders at the Vulcaanhaven is not prohibited. Firing on all cylinders at Vulcaanhaven is exactly the speed we enjoy most! In this newsletter, amongst others, extended services and facilities to cope with our growth.
We hope you enjoy reading the newsletter and I hope to meet with you soon again,
Yours,
Hans Meeuwisse.

Port Authority will invest € 370 million this year
The Port of Rotterdam Authority has released her investment plans for the coming year. A respectable total of € 370 million will be invested. Half of this amount will go into infrastructure in the exisitng port area. The investments are designed to enhance the throughput capabilities (both in speed and in volumes) of the port. These investments are part of a 10-year-investment plan consisting of a total of € 4 billion. The Port Authority can easily meet the criteria set by its external financiers, meaning that this total plan is under no pressure due to the economic reality these days.
At Vulcaanhaven we also invest in safety measures, service level and storage facilities. In this newsletter you will be able to read about our latest plans!
More cargo containerized
With changing consumer needs and different possibilities for global transport, transporting goods in containers is becoming more and more popular. The share of the container in the transport of general cargo in Rotterdam keeps climbing. In 2008 this number has reached the point of 81%. Transport by container provides additional advantages, and also at Vulcaanhaven we see this shift in preference. We receive relatively less bulk, as opposed to more goods in containers. At our (old and new!) terminals we have excellent possibilities to discharge and way both quickly and efficiently, minimizing waiting times for everybody.

The Netherlands overtakes France
The Netherlands has overtaken France in being a bigger goods exporter. This means that it is now in the top five, together with Germany, China, the United States and Japan. This is a big achievement by such a small company.
In the Netherlands, exports account for 35% of the GEDP, and an increase of 15% of Dutch exports, is equal to a 4% increase of the total value of global exports. Vulcaanhaven feels comfortable with this image of a small player accomplishing big achievements.
At Vulcaanhaven, a small but dedicated and skilled team (both in the warehouse as in the office) strives to fulfill the needs of customers as good as possible. This has not gone unnoticed, as more and more new customers require our services. Please remember, old and new, you are all welcome and all our customers are entitled to our Vulcaanhaven Standard quality services!

Rotterdam Rules
Wednesday 23 September, sixteen countries have officially expressed their support and their collaboration with the new UN conventions ‘Rotterdam Rules’. This convention states the rights and obligations involved in the maritime carriage of goods.
“The Rotterdam Rules are the first rules governing the carriage of goods by sea and connecting or previous transport by land. This used to require separate contracts. Also, responsibility and liability during the whole transport process are clearly demarcated. Furthermore, the convention puts in place the infrastructure for the development of e-commerce in maritime transport. This will mean less paperwork. The shorter turnaround times will reduce the chance of errors and lower costs.” as can be read on www.portofrotterdam.nl.
Sparta
Rotterdam
Rydell Poepon was the matchwinner last week when Sparta won with 1-0 from RKC Waalwijk. The home game, played in their 'Castle' Stadium, started with an offensive Sparta in the first 15 minutes. This immediately resulted in the goal by Rydell Poepon, who scored a header after an excellent pass of Romano Denneboom.
The second half of the game did not show real good football, but the team tried hard to keep the points in Rotterdam. RKC did try to score, and was close for a few times. However, the Sparta team had a strong defense and trusted the defense and the organizational qualities. This indeed led to a success this weak, and Sparta was climbed in the rankings to the 10th place.
If you want to see one of the home games please let us know. The new season will quickly start again, we will be able to take you to the matches of Sparta. A game at
Sparta is always a big happening, with a great atmosphere. You will
enjoy it with us.

Joke of the Month
How much is two plus two?
An engineer, a physicist, and a lawyer were being interviewed for a position as chief executive officer of a large corporation.
The engineer was interviewed first, and was asked a long list of questions, ending with "How much is two plus two?"
The engineer excused himself, and made a series of measurements and calculations before returning to the board room and announcing, "Four."
The physicist was next interviewed, and was asked the same questions. Before answering the last question, he excused himself, made for the library, and did a great deal of research.
After a consultation with the United States Bureau of Standards and many calculations, he also announced "Four."
The lawyer was interviewed last, and was asked the same questions. At the end of his interview, before answering the last question, he drew all the shades in the room, looked outside the door to see if anyone was there, checked the telephone for listening devices, and asked "How much do you want it to be?"
