"Stable Progress"
Many of our appreciated clients are aware of our daily efforts to improve where possible. Appreciation is a two way street. Vulcaanhaven’s efforts do not remain unnoticed in the market. We strive and will continue to do our utmost to report as quickly as possible. Be it storage reports, delivery confirmations, releases (be it conditional / unconditional) or results for processing. What is it that allows and enables Vulcaanhaven to perform at this level? Is it the office, on top of the terminal which makes us your ‘eyes and ears’? Is it our terminal overall, the IT, which is tailor made to our business? Or is it our mentality to strive for continued progress. Perhaps our clients themselves have the answer.
The two way street is appreciation for excellent services on the one end and continued customer support to Vulcaanhaven on the other. Whichever, we strive for progress and continuity. As an example our latest crushing and screening dust collection system. Progress is made. Overall progress is what we are looking for. Stable progress is what our clients want to see. And so do I…
We hope you enjoy reading the newsletter and I hope to meet with you soon again,
Yours,
Hans Meeuwisse.

Dutch exporters optimistic about remaining 2009
The Dutch export branche is quite optimistic about the remaining half of 2009. The test was held for the eleventh time, and covered the experience and predictions of 3800 different companies. The test has (in history) proved to have quite some predictive power.
In current times, we at Vulcaanhaven see that our customers value our one-stop-shop principle more than ever, and use our just-in-time delivery possibilities to their advantages. This has allowed us to show our strengths, and put our 'money where our mouth was'. Indeed, we always tell you that our services are top of the bill and now we finaly are able to prove this. We thank our customers for their longstanding loyalty, and welcome the new customers to our services. Remember, we are here to help you take care of every situation you can think of. That's just part of the Vulcaanhaven Standard.
Test with hybrid locomotive
A hybrid locomotive will be operated in the Port of Rotterdam for the comming two months. This locomotive has the ability to reduce fuel usage with 40%, reduce CO2 emissions and is also much more quiet than conventional ones. The locomotive, designed by Alstom Transport in Ridderkerk, is part of the sustainable strategy the Port of Rotterdam, and Vulcaanhaven, are persuing. Also, it is the first hybrid locomotive in the world. Vice President Smits (Port of Rotterdam) is happy that Rotterdam is abe to be the first to implement such novel technologies, and expects that more of these locomotives will follow once this test is completed.
Please remember that Vulcaanhaven terminal is connected to this railway system (total handling of 1.01 million TEU in 2008!) and therefore reachable by train. If we can be of any assistance to you, please don't hesitate to contact us.
New Record in the Port of Rotterdam
The MSC Danit is the first ship with a capacity of over 14.000 teu to be handled in the Port of Rotterdam. Due to a specific design, there is room for 14.028 teu, which is bigger than the MSC Beatrice, which was the former biggest ship handled in Rotterdam. The ship is built by the Korean Daewoo, and MSC has placed an order of in total 18 of these 'super' ships. Altough this ship is a little big for the Vulcaanhaven terminal, please note that we are able to handle a variety of vessels due to the 39 ft deepwater berth and a total quaylength of 525 meters. Two gantry cranes with the liftcapacity of 16 mt each cover up to a total span of 160 meter, and can be used for board-board handeling upto Panamax vessels as wel as terminal discharge. In addition to these gantry cranes, Vulcaanhaven has access to a fleet of floating grab cranes for board-board handling.

Netherlands closing in on Germany as export country
In 2007, the Netherlands had third place on the list of the biggest export countries of Europe. Leader is, and was, Germany, but the Netherlands is closing in with a second place in 2008. The relative increase of total value handled also increased as opposed to one year earlier.
One of the main reasons for this increase and impressive runner up position is the distribution to the European hinterland. The Netherlands can be seen as the portal to the rest of Europe, and the Port of Rotterdam holds a valuable and strategically important position.
Vulcaanhaven is an excellent example. The location in the port of Rotterdam, the long history (with lots of lessons learned) and knowledge about transport, legal- and customs matters and an enthusiastic team will help offer you the best to your clients. We are always at your service! Consider that the Vulcaanhaven Standard.
Is experience the difference? Experience the difference….!
Large, worldwide operating warehousing companies have new names almost on a weekly basis. When well know people disappear, the experience disappears with them. In economical language that is called loss of knowledge. Yet, at Vulcaanhaven we believe it is the most essential asset of the organization. A well know story of a very successful American businessman went as follows:
- how did you get so succesful
- “good decision” he replied.
- o.k., but how do you make good decisions
- “experience” he replied.
- o.k. but how do you get experience
- “bad decisions” he replied.
Experience is not something you pick up from a book. You need time. Time to serve clients, space to make mistakes, then turn these mistakes into learning moments. The older you get the more experience and the less mistakes you make. It is a logical consequence. With 32 active years in this business Hans Meeuwisse at Vulcaanhaven has experience. If you want to experience the difference, call us now!

Sparta
Rotterdam
Sparta Rotterdam ended their season with a draw. The Rottredam Castle club ended the game with 1-1 against NEC. Erik Falkenburg opened the score for Sparta in the 25th minute. Adelaye even had the possibility to score the 2-0 but unfortunately a NEC player was there in time to stop him. Just before half time NEC scored the 1-1, which would be a fair result in retrospect. All in all, it was a season with ups and downs, but the 4-0 win against AJAX at the end of the season is a match to be remembered!
If you want to see one of the home games please let us know. The new season will quickly start again, we will be able to take you to the matches of Sparta. A game at
Sparta is always a big happening, with a great atmosphere. You will
enjoy it with us.

Joke of the Month
The Blonde and the Rolls-Royce
A blonde walks into a bank in New York City and asks for the loan officer. She says she is going to Europe on business for two weeks and needs to borrow $5000.
The bank officers says the bank will need some kind of security for such a loan, so the blonde hands over the keys to a new Rolls Royce, parked on the street, in front of the bank.
Everything checks out, and the bank agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan. An employee drives the Rolls into the bank's underground garage and parks it there.
Two weeks later, the blonde returns and repays the $5000, and the interest, which is $15.41.
The loan officer says, "We are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a multimillionaire. What puzzles us is why would you bother to borrow $5000?"
The blonde replied, "Where else in New York City can I park my car for 2 weeks for $15.00?"
