"TIP or TIO..."
The present crisis is much written about. The Dalai Lama stated, if there is a problem and you are able to solve it, there is no need to worry. If there is a problem and you are not able to solve it, worrying does not help.
Basically, we say the same. Vulcaanhaven is Thinking In Opportunities, rather than Thinking In Problems. An example best at hand is Vulcaanhaven's continued efforts to be the best in her business. The past year has brought us many challenges and we dealt with each and every one of them in a positive manner. Our latest upgrade on the acquired environmental license is a perfect example.
What have we achieved else the past year.
- upgrading our crushing and screening installations with the latest dust collection equipment
- we finalized our IT investment program, including top of the bill bank releasing systems.
- Vulcaanhaven has been calibrated and accredited as a “Port Training Centre” for young people wanted to start up a career in the Port of Rotterdam.
In other words, yes there is a crisis, yes, it will have an impact on most any business, but no, it should not stop you from thinking in opportunities. Like Vulcaanhaven, be creative and focus. When using the word ‘problem’, my old golf teacher comes back to my memory. Every Saturday morning (I was called his ‘Saturday morning problem’) I went down there for 10 years in a row. He used to give ma a 5 iron and asked me to hit it 75 meters.
I said “ Ray, that is a problem for me”.
Ray answered, “Hans, there are no problems, there are situations…”
And for every situation there is a solution. Vulcaanhaven is enthusiastic and upbeat on 2009. New opportunities, hard work, positive approach. We do wish you and your family a healthy 2009 in every respect!

Space Management – a Han(d)some job…… Warehouses are full?
“The past 31 years I have always worked with an office on top of the warehouses and terminal. Not only did it crate a full comprehensive understanding from the job on the work floor, it made me communicate so much easier with my clients. This way I became their eyes and ears. Quick response times on sizing, if trucks are available and receiving back documents created a bond of trust between the customer and myself. Take space management for instance. My warehouse bosses over the past years came back with remarks that the warehouses were full. Through my understanding of the business and hands on approach, I used to go through the warehouses and developed a space management system that still works today: pen & paper….. Noting down what could be piled differently, what could be stacked in an alternative manner etc.etc. My half a day on the terminal usually resulted in additional warehousing capacity. On top of the job means being able to prevent problems from happening. On top of the job means assisting everybody within the Vulcaanhaven team. Consequently our customers worldwide are guaranteed a dedicated team, performing on top of the job….” Our warehouses reserve space for large quantities of material any time, so if you need extra storage space, don't hasitate to contact our .
Customs Corner
Customs administration is more than a simple T1 document. The world of customs and VAT is a world in itself. Lack of knowledge when dealing with this important aspect of our daily business can cause serious financial damage to the client...
Did you know that you are liable for VAT when the administration is not in accordance with regulations set by the authorities? At Vulcaanhaven we invest in proper computer systems to ensure a 100% control over all cargoes, in and out, crushed/screened, repacked, accompanied by all necessary and correct customs papers. Once a truck has reached the final destination, signed cmr waybills are received back into our office for further completion of our administration for Fiscal Representation.
You see for yourself: when the truck has left our warehouse, our job is only finished when all documentation is handled correctly. Any questions? Feel free to connect with us. Thank you for choosing Vulcaanhaven!
"The Golfer and his Caddy: Teamwork"
Ever had a close look at how golf is played on a high level? The caddy carrying the bag of the golfer only? Not at all, the caddy does much more. He/she knows the pin positions on each green, knows distances to be hit, knows distances his ‘boss’ the golfer can hit, knows his weaknesses and strenghts, can read undulations on each green and does a lot of preparation work: in all, a caddy indeed is much more than a carrier of the golf bag. Now look at the relationship between you, our client (the golfer) and us (the caddy). You: you decide, perform to your clients, you score. Us: we assist, carry some burden, absord stress, know our way aroung in warehousing, processing & logistics. In all, not much of a difference. ` Clients & Vulcaanhaven, operating like a team. We both strive for success!

MR. NICE GUY....
In all my 29 years of working experience in the Rotterdam Port, I have observed a lot, as you can imagine. One of the most peculiar experiences is the Nice Guy. He gets the business, because he is a nice guy. Never understood that. Is ?nice guy? synonymous for a good, professional understanding of the business? Nine times out of 10 it is not.
I know. At Vulcaanhaven, colleagues have a wide know how of customs, chartering, warehousing, trucking, bills of lading, processing, you name it. Of course it is a great asset when the company has multi functional staff, genuinely interested in serving the client, with a sound knowledge of the technical side of the business. Servicing you to the best of their ability. And that ability is available at Vulcaanhaven. Believe me!
From a distance (clients communicate with us by mail or phone) it is very hard to tell. The nightmare of all nightmares for clients, commodity banks and insurance companies? A Nice Guy as a third party warehouse....
Safety First!
Your material is safe in our 24/7 secured warehouse with video surveillance!

Delightfull Duo.....
Started as young ladies at Albatros/Vulcaanhaven, both Christine an Angelique have remained loyal to the company and its clients throughout the last decade. Multi functional day to day jobs are their challenge, therefore they have become allround professional operators on our terminal. We could not imagine doing our workload without them.
Nowadays, the ladies have matured, have become mothers (both married with 2 children) and hopefully will fullfill at least another decade of excellent work.
Sparta
Rotterdam
This is a very memerable newsletter for us. Why? Well, Sparta is ranked higher than its city rival Feyenoord. After the extremely well played match against Heerenveen this week, Sparta switched positions with Feyenoord.
The match against Heerenveen showed that Sparta that a lot of work has been done and progress has been made. The ‘Club of the Castle’ with 4-1, and it was deserved.
It was a splendid match with a very good second half.
If you want to see one of the home games please let us know. Also next
season we will be able to take you to the matches of Sparta. A game at
Sparta is always a big happening, with a great atmosphere. You will
enjoy it with us.

Joke of the Month
Its amazing to think out of the box
An old Scottish man lived alone in Aberdeen.
He wanted to dig his potato garden, but it was hard work for his advanced years as the ground was very hard.
His only son, David who used to help him, was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and described his predicament.
Dear Son,
I am feeling pretty bad because it looks like I won't be able to plant my potato garden this year. I'm just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. If you were here my troubles would be over. I know you would dig the plot for me.
Love Dad.
A few days later he received a letter from his son.
Dear Dad,
Don't dig up the garden. That's where I buried the stolen money.
Love David
At 4 A.M. the next morning, The FBI, Police, CSI arrived and dug up the entire area without finding any money.
They apologized to the old man and left.
That same day the old man received another letter from his son.
Dear Dad,
Go ahead and plant the potatos now. Your garden is now dug, That's the best I could do under the circumstances.
Love David
