We have 'IT' for YOU!

We all know how it works.  We buy a phone or a laptop. Six weeks later there is a new model and the one you just bought recently is a lot cheaper. Bummer! Fact of life. Is it very hard to time an investment correctly? Rather difficult in our business. Because of the continued change of circumstances.

It is a fact  that we administrate a lot, customs, vat matters, stocks in/out, processing jobs, bookkeeping, waybills, warehouse manifests, weighbridge tickets…. need I go on? Ever since the start up of our business (for me some 30 years ago….) we have opted for IT solutions. For efficiency reasons, adopting the latest software means, making our IT Systems work for us rather than we work for our IT Systems.

This month we approved an investment of EUR 100.000 in new hardware and software. Implemented and operational second half of September. If clients wish to log in to our system and check their records, they are able to do so based on a specified contract with Vulcaanhaven.

We have IT… for you!

Have a great summer, a good read and thanks for choosing us!

T.J. (Hans) Meeuwisse.

CONFERENCE: Minor Metals & Rare Earths 2006

Major changes have been taking place in the world’s metals markets, with continuing high demand from China, increasing costs of raw materials, energy and freight have resulted in price volatility that has not been seen for many years. In addition to covering minor metals, this years conference we are broadening our scope and will also include rare earth metals and their compounds, an industry which China has become increasingly influential over the years.

In this conference organised by Metal-Pages in conjunction with the Chinese Society of Rare Earths (CSRE) the focus will be on the whole spectrum of minor metals and rare earths discussed by an expert panel of speakers from around the globe.

Vulcaanhaven will be represented at this conference by operations manager  Rudi Voorrecht, who also speaks excellent Chinese.

Having a long experience in metals warehousing, distribution and vallue added services, Vulcaanhaven is well equipped to handle your cargo in a neutral and efficient manner. For any enquiries: rudi@vulcaanhaven.nl

Screening a safeguard

Screening of ferro-alloys proves usefull in avoiding claims and problems at your receivers. Another meaning of the word screening is a regular check of procedures and staff.  Vulcaanhaven needs to maintain a high level of security as we are safekeepers of your valuable materials.

Therefore a periodic check of all our security measures, screening of procedures and staff by an external organisation is very usefull to mend the fence where needed and keep a high level of awareness.

This years audit has been conducted by Hoffmann Bedrijfsrecherche. The report of course is confidential, but we can reveal the general conclusion: security awareness is very high. The report has been discussed at all levels in our organisation and recommendations implemented.

Again proof of our sense of responsibility towards our clients and their materials.

Key Figures Q1-2006 Antwerp vs Rotterdam

The Belgium port of Antwerp being near to Rotterdam in many aspects seeks to rival with the port of Rotterdam.  Total throughput in Q1 2006: Antwerp 39.9 mln tonnes vs 91,37 mln tonnes for Rotterdam.  TEU troughput: 1,66 mln vs 2,45 mln. However the growth rate of container 'tonnes' was more than two times more than in Rotterdam. Also we see a shift of handling of ores and scrap metal (dry bulk) from Rotterdam to Antwerp.

On liquid bulk (oil derivates and chemicals) we see a shift from Antwerp to Rotterdam.

2nd Roller Crusher: Amazing Capacity

Nothing in life is static. If you continue to look for improvements, eventually you will succeed. Was our 01st Roller crusher capable of sizing 1mt p/hour, the new addition in fact sizes 4mt p/hour to cored wire size. More than we hoped for and anticipated on.

Clients are welcome to use this highly specialised service.

European transportation

Although trucks have been increasingly difficult to find on a short notice during the last few months, due to oil prices, risen costs and the lack of truckdrivers in Europe, we have always been able to find availability against competitive rates with reliable trucking companies.

So, if you are looking for trucking of bulk or packed material, please do not hesitate to ask us for a quotation and availability.

Martin Abbott Chief Executive of the LME

Great news for the LME, they have appointed Martin Abbott to take over from their current CEO Simon Heale. Mr. Abbott will assume the position at October 2nd, so well before the annual LME dinner.

The fact that Mr. Abbott has always been open and critical of the LME as president and publisher of MB metals division gives us the confidence that he might be the best thing that happened to the LME over the past 35 years.....

Need an ETA...? Ask us!

There are a number of advantages to work on the Vulcaanhaven terminal. One of them is the view. It never bores!

Port activities all around, later this year our neighbour Norfolk Line will be operational with vessel in and out of Vulcaanhaven each day. The picture shows how close we come to the vessels. So if you need an updated ETA.... Just let us know!

Amazing statements

My mechanic told me, “I couldn’t repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder…”
